My name's Richard George; I'm a PHP software engineer and manager based in London, UK. I currently work for a major magazine publisher as Technical Manager, running a team of 9 developers. Previously I've worked with Web Design and New Media agencies and training companies; my degree, studied in the UK, France and Germany, was in Electronics and I started my career in embedded development, in C. I also have significant experience as a sysadmin on Linux platforms.
Recently I've become more of an advocate for best practices and development skills; partly because I enjoy learning and the chance to share and improve my skills, and partly for the pragmatic reason that I've continually found it difficult to hire good developers; there's a major skills deficit in what is, after all, a young industry. As such I'm a committee member for PHP London, the local community group for PHP.
As can be seen from the slowly growing "So you want to build a software team" series, I also have a keen interest in project and team management; after all, if the job is to produce quality software, it's not good enough for the team lead or senior engineers to be good; the whole team needs to work efficiently and develop their skills. The more effectively a team can work together, the easier the work is for everyone.

Does anyone else hate "webinars" as much as I do? Not just the stupid name, but the terrible usability?
